摘要
文章旨在基于"葛浩文英译小说汉英平行语料库"考察葛浩文夫妇合译风格特点。通过定量比较葛浩文合译与其独译刘震云小说英译本、葛浩文合译刘震云小说与其独译莫言、苏童小说英译本中各种语言形式参数的统计结果,得出三点主要发现:一是葛氏夫妇刘震云小说英译本的词汇丰富和多样度较低、语言表达较为简洁、句子较为短小,他们对原文句子结构尊崇程度较高,侧重采用异化翻译策略;二是葛氏夫妇合译与葛浩文独译刘震云小说在中英文文字量比值、中英文主要句对类型比例、报道动词said出现位置上、强调斜体词使用方面均存在显著差异;三是葛氏夫妇合译刘震云小说与葛浩文独译莫言、苏童小说在英译本词汇丰富和多样度、中英文主要句对类型比例、强调斜体词使用上均存在显著差异。以上差异表明,葛氏夫妇合译刘震云小说的风格确实具有独特性。
This article aims at studying Howard Goldblatt and his wife Lin Li-chun’s co-translation style based on the Chinese-English parallel corpus of Howard Goldblatt’s English version of Chinese novels.Through a comparative analysis of various parameters in Goldblatt(and his wife)’s English version of novels by Liu Zhunyun,Mo Yan and Su Tong,the paper has got the following findings:1)the couple’s version of Liu Zhunyun’s three novels show low abundance and diversity in diction,conciseness with short sentences and not much explanation,mainly keeping original sentence structures,and it results mainly from their foreignization strategy,2)their version of Liu Zhunyun’s novles and Howard’s version of Liu Zhunyun’s novel Cell Phone differ significantly in English/Chinese vocabulary ratio,standardized type/token ratio,main parallel sentence pair ratio,the location of“said”in reporting clauses,and the use of emphatic italics,and 3)their version of Liu Zhunyun’s novles and Howard’s version of Mo Yan and Su Tong’s novels differ significantly in standardized type/token ratio,main parallel sentence pair ratio,and the use of emphatic italics.These findings indicate that the couple presents a unique style of co-translating Liu Zhenyun’s novels.
