摘要
通过关联二原则及关联性的两个决定因素语境效果和处理努力来解释运用英语委婉语时的人类认知过程。运用委婉语时,交际双方始终遵循关联原则,期待或假设话语具有最佳关联性,值得付出努力去处理。受话者力图以最小的心智努力获取最大的语境效果,从而达到正确理解话语的目的,但委婉语间接、模糊的特性所要求的额外的处理努力,会被运用委婉语时所产生的额外的语境效果抵消。可见,关联理论对委婉语的理解具有较强的解释力。
The principle of relevance, cognitive effects aud processing effort are taken into consideration for exploring the cognitive process when euphemisms are used. According to the principle of relevance, every utterance comes with a guarantee of its own optimal relevance. When using a euphemism, the communicator is expected to make his contribution relevant enough to be worth the audience＇s while of processing effort. Euphemism claims the audience＇s extra effort for nnderstanding, which is offset by the extra cognitive effects.
