摘要
英语委婉语现有定义存在着语言或言语现象与修辞格相混、定义中存在仍需定义的概念、外延过窄等缺点。根据委婉语的婉指对象、使用原动力、区别性特点、构成手段等要素,委婉语可被定义为:委婉语是在特定的语境中,对于使人感到敬畏、恐惧、羞耻、不适的事物,信息组织者(说写者)有意地运用语音、语义、语法等手段而形成的对这些事物非直接的语言或言语表达,从而避免使信息组织者本人、信息理解者(听读者)、话语涉及的第三方即信息的潜在理解者有消极的心理反应。
