Robert Morrison, the first Protestant missionary to China, was a pioneer translator who initiated both the Chinese translation of the Bible and the English translation of Confucian Classics. This paper revisits his 1812 version of the Daxue in terms of its deployment of"literal" translation strategy, its sinological accomplishment, and the critical responses it incurred. This is followed by some reflections on the role of translation in constructing the images of China and Confucianism in the colonial era.
