Hepatotoxicity is the most common organ injury due to occupational and environmental exposure to industrial and agricultural toxical chemicals.A wide range of liver pathologies ranging from cell necrosis to cirrhosis, fibrosis and cancer have been observed following chemical exposure both in humans and in animal models.Considerable literature has shown that natural polysaccharides from plants, animals and microorganisms exhibited significant prophylactic and protective effects on chemical-induced hepatic injuries. These active polysaccharides extracted from different materials were treated and exhibited significant protective and therapeutical effects on CCl4-,D-galactosamine-,LPS-,nitrosodimethylamine-or cadmium-induced hepatic injury animal model. We summarize in this review the published polysaccharides and their pharmacologic activities for liver-protection.Therefore,some hepato-protective candidates might be found and developed as drugs or functional foods from these active polysaccharides in future.
