摘要
文章基于篇章样本分析,比较葛浩文英译《红高粱家族》《酒国》的质量、风格及翻译策略,由此考察其译者惯习的历时变化。这两部翻译小说初版相距仅七年,却跨越了葛浩文翻译生涯的两个时期,其间英美文学场的结构、中国当代文学在场域占据的位置、葛浩文积累的符号资本有显著变化,其译者惯习也随之发生变化:翻译《红高粱家族》之时,葛浩文开始转向商业翻译模式,译作较多意译、小幅度删改和段落重组;翻译《酒国》之时,其学者惯习有所回归,因而坚持译作应尽量忠于原作。
This article attempts to examine the diachronic changes in Howard Goldblatt’s translatorial habitus by comparing his translation of Mo Yan’s Red Sorghum and The Republic of Wine in terms of translation quality,style and translation strategies adopted.Although published with only seven years in between,the two translated novels belong to two periods in Goldblatt’s professional career.The seven years between 1993 and 2000 witnessed significant changes in the structure of the Anglo-American literary field,the position occupied by contemporary Chinese literature in that field,and Goldblatt’s accumulated symbolic capital.Consequently,his translatorial habitus changed noticeably:when working on Red Sorghum Goldblatt was just switching to a commercial translation mode and he tended to frequently use paraphrase,slight deletions and reparagraphing;yet when rendering The Republic of Wine his scholar’s habitus returned and once again he advocated that the translation should be faithful to the original as far as possible.
