The allegory of Kun-Peng appears in the Zhuangzi three times outside of the section“Wandering in Ultimate Freedom.”Each time it appears in different perspectives and presents different contents, thus showing the subjective condition of freedom and the course of freedom as a whole.Freedom is not a given thing, but must be won through the self-transformation of the subject and the elevation of one s level of existence. As a symbol of the subject of freedom,Kun-Peng represents the course of freedom, which consists of the stages of sublimation from smallness to greatness, from greatness to transformation, and from transformation to profundity. The journey of freedom is constructed by the paths of ascension and decline:the path of ascension is a journey toward the metaphysical origin, which ultimately establishes spiritual freedom, while the path of decline overcomes the confrontation between the metaphysical and physical, proceeding towards complete and individual personal freedom.Although Kun-Peng,who is presented in different perspectives, shows the course of freedom,he does not reach the ultimate realm of freedom.
