Since Liang Qichao first translated several stanzas of The Isles of Greece into Chinese, we have witnessed dozens of Chinese versions. The repeated translations and re-interpretations of this poem are not for the sheer sake of skills or artistic pursuit. Instead, the interpretations, manipulations and near-ritual translation activity of translators and writers speak volumes that the poem has turned into a symbol of national salvation and spiritual resistance, and has played a significant role in the construction of modern Chinese literature and national mentality.
