It is widely agreed that the character‘卢’refers to a place where liquor was sold in the Han Dynasty. But the exact meaning of‘卢’was hotly debated. The present paper, based on textual analysis of the documentation of‘卢’in four notes of Shiji and Hanshu, proposes three possible explanations for‘卢’,namely‘垆’,‘炉’,and‘罏’.Furthermore,we examined the pictorial bricks unearthed from Sichuan and suggested that liquor should really be sold at‘垆’,a pedestal built of rammed earth or adobe to house wine vessels.A wooden pedestal could also be possible. The Biography of Sima Xiangru of Hansu, commented by YAN Shigu, mentioned the same kind of pedestal, which was used for liquor filtration in the brewing area and for placing jars stored with liquor in the selling area.
