摘要
情态是当代西方语言学各领域的关注热点。传统语义学讨论了情态的基本定义、类型和表达形式等问题。语言类型学在跨语言的框架下概括情态的基本概念、类型以及情态的语法化过程。系统功能语言学和话语分析聚焦于情态在语篇中的人际交互功能。认知语言学采用"力动态"和"力争控制"理论诠释情态语义。语用学从言语行为理论、礼貌原则等角度探讨情态的语用功能,并从关联理论的角度阐释情态话语的理解。本文回顾并梳理了情态在以上领域的代表性研究,以期对汉语情态和英语情态的后续研究提供参考。
Modality has been extensively studied in the literature.The present study aims to review contemporary significant contributions to modality from different perspectives.Traditional semantic approaches to modality adopted by linguists such as Palmer and Coates discuss the definition,classification and expressions of modality in English.Typological approaches to modality define and classify modality on the basis of cross-linguistic evidence and investigate the grammaticalization paths for modality.Studies on modality within the frameworks of systemic functional grammar and discourse analysis examine the frequency of modal expressions in texts and also the interpersonal function they express.Studies on modality in cognitive linguistics characterize modal meanings in terms of Talmy’s notion of“force dynamics”and Langacker’s new concept of“the striving for control”.Pragmatic literature on modality explores the pragmatic functions of modal expressions and comprehension of modal utterances in terms of relevance theory.The author hopes that the present study would serve as reference work for future studies on modality.
