The "succinctness" and "implicitness" are two of merits of Chinese traditional poetry. Since the succinctness is related to omission and the implicitness is related to polysemy, these two merits bring endless troubles and debates to the translation circle. The situation Wang Shizhen and his poems faced in English-speaking world is very representative, even though they are not the hottest translating objects. Through a careful comparison and reading of translations of Wang’s poetry, this paper reveals the negative effects of succinctness and implicitness in the process of translating Wang’s poems, and emphasizes the " untranslatability" of Chinese traditional poetry, which derives from discrepancies between Chinese language and Western language.
