摘要
本文试论中国现当代小说中乡土语言的英译原则与策略。从翻译操作层面看,主张方言翻译应以"忠实"、"对等"为原则是不切实际的;考虑到当前制约中国文学英译和译者翻译决策的各种社会政治文化因素,也不宜强求中国乡土语言英译应以"忠实"、"对等"为原则。因此,当前中国乡土语言英译应以"部分再现"为基本原则,文学方言自创译法和方言特征淡化译法是符合该原则的合理可行的翻译策略。
This paper offers tentative discussions of the principle and strategies of translating Chinese folk language or regional/social dialect in modern Chinese fiction into English. It is argued that the pursuit of faithfulness or equivalence in dialect translation is impractical and that given the social - cultural constraints on English translation of Chinese literature and the translator＇s use of translation strategies, it is also unreasonable to ask for faithfulness or equivalence in English rendering of Chinese folk language. Accordingly, for the present the basic principle of partial representation should be observed while the strategies of creating an ad hoc literary dialect and making sparing use of target language dialect features are both desirable and feasible.
