Translation is an act of cross-cultural communication involving two languages and cultures. To translate Chinese into a foreign language is to spread Chinese culture. One of the major issues the translator has to address is how to spread Chinese culture effectively so that it could be readily and agreeably acceptable to the target reader. This paper attempts to examine the strategy of rewriting of linguistic politeness as found in the Story of the Stone by David Hawkes and John Minford. When it comes to the translation of Chinese literary works, we have to adequately rewrite the source text, taking into account the reception of the target reader and the ideological and poetological demands of the target culture. Too much foreignization or too much emphasis on fidelity, which fails to meet the ordinary reader's reading expectations or his aesthetic demands, is most likely to incur the termination of the reading act and the failure of cultural dissemination.
