There is a mistake in traditional explanation of Lao-tzu's saying the tao that can be expressed in words is not the true tao. Taken the science of Chinese character as a point of departure, Tao here refers to three meanings: the place where human footprint can reach; the place where human mind can reach; and the place where both human thought and practice can reach. The Tao in Lac^tzu could then be illustrated in this way: Tao that can be expressed in words is not the common Tao; in fact, it is concerned with specific time, environment, and certain subjective and objective phenomena. Tao is able to be understood because the law for things' existence, movement, development, and change can be followed; but this also relies on subjects' talent, knowledge, and desire for knowledge. Tao therefore is not able to be understood because one lacks the wisdom or intelligence; or one has the difficulty in obtaining the wisdom or unified recognition. Tao is hence not beyond expression.
