Traditional Chinese classics were introduced into Europe and the western world by the translation of the missionaries coming to ancient China. In late Qing Dynasty, James Legge, the dean of Anglo-Chinese College as well as the first professor on sinology of Oxford University, translated the Chinese classics including the Four Shu and the Five King. Taking the Zhouyi translated by James Legge for example, this thesis aims to study his "sympathetic understanding" of Chinese culture and tradition during the course of translation and dissemination of traditional Chinese classics from the view of a missionary, analyses the multiple implication of "sympathetic understanding" and the sinology it expresses, and affirms the value and contribution of James Legge on account of his translation and dissemination of traditional Chinese classics.
