Objective To investigate the effects of different intervention times on scalp acupuncture treatment for acute cerebral infarction. Methods One hundred and fifty patients with acute cerebral infarction were randomly allocated to five groups. Group A received routine medication. Group B, C, D and E received scalp acupuncture within 24 hrs and at 3, 7 and 14 days after the onset, respectively, in addition to routine medication. The therapeutic effects were compared between the five groups of patients using the Modified Edinburgh-Scandinavia Stroke Scale. Results The pre-/post-treatment difference in the neurological deficit score was statistically significant in all the five groups (P〈0.05). There were statistically significant post-treatment differences in the neurological deficit score and the marked efficacy rate between group A or E and group B, C or D (P〈0.05). Conclusions Scalp acupuncture has a definite therapeutic effect on acute cerebral infarction. There was no significant difference in the therapeutic effect between scalp acupuncture interventions at the three time points within 7 days after the onset, but there was as compared with scalp acupuncture intervention at 14 days after the onset. It is preliminarily considered that less than 7 days after the onset is the optimal time for scalp acupuncture treatment.
