A history of literature is a form of interpreting literature. Therefore,an 'interpretative framework' provides a good means of understanding and reflecting on the foundation upon which existing histories of literature came into being. The various writings about the history of modern Chinese literature over nearly a century are based on two major interpretive frameworks, centered respectively on 'politics' and 'aesthetics.' Originating in the 1950s,the former framework prefers to explain modern Chinese literature from the perspective of politics and highlights the dominant role of politics in literary transformation. The latter approach emerged in the 1980s- 1990s and is characterized by its de-politicizing discourse and emphasis on the aesthetic traits of literature. Each has its merits and each deals with part of literature, but inevitably each also has limitations.Against this background,we may need to establish an interpretative framework centered on literature itself.
