Studies on the persuasiveness of metaphors in political discourse have long focused on individual discourses. Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) theory proposed by Falrclough (1995) upgrades the study by emphasizing significant roles of social and historical contexts. The present paper reports on a corpus-based study of metaphors in one major form of political discourse, namely, the presidential radio address. Taking CDA theory as the framework and with the help of "Corpus for Specific Research of English", the study conducts a critical metaphorical analysis of the eight-year-long radio addresses delivered by the former President of the United States, George Bush. The study aims to explore the types of conceptual metaphors used in Bush's justification of the Iraq War, as well as the persuasiveness of metaphors and the related discourse strategies. It is revealed that three major types of metaphors of conflict, illness and religion are used, in which metaphors play a significant role in stirring and evoking the audience's emotion. The use of metaphors also helps to rationalize and justify the speaker's course of action and his personal intention, so as to achieve the intended communicative goals.
