Implicit and explicit grammatical knowledge in second language reading comprehension:A study of advanced Chinese EFL learners

摘要 本文以190名研究生英语学习者为对象,考察了语法知识对英语第二语言阅读理解的贡献。我们分别使用限时语法判断和语法改错任务测量了学习者的隐性和显性语法知识。在阅读理解测试中,我们主要考察三项能力同指解析能力、语篇推断能力以及文章大意总结能力。我们同时测量了学习者的英语词汇量,并将其用作对阅读理解进行回归分析时的协变量。层级回归分析结果表明在消除词汇量的影响后,隐性语法知识对阅读理解水平的预测力要大于显性语法知识。 This study examines the contribution of grammatical knowledge to L2 reading comprehension among 190 advanced EFL learners studying for their master's degrees in China.Learners' implicit grammatical knowledge was measured with a timed grammaticality judgment task,their explicit grammar with a grammatical error correction task.The reading comprehension test covered three comprehension skills,namely,co-reference,textual inference,and gist.Measured with the Vocabulary Levels Test,vocabulary size was also included as a covariate for the hierarchical regression analysis with reading comprehension as the criterion variable.Results show that learners' implicit grammatical knowledge has a larger impact on reading comprehension than their explicit knowledge,over and above the factor of vocabulary size.The finding is discussed in light of the importance of syntactic efficiency to reading comprehension at the advanced stage of English learning.
