摘要
英国小说家德拉布尔以其创作的当下性而著称,即所谓展现社会现实的真实景象的"状态小说"。而内涵丰富,寓意深远的意象正是她传达主题的话语方式。德拉布尔所使用的意象大致可归为自然、神话和宗教三大类,《瀑布》和《象牙门》等小说名即是富含文化寓意的隐喻性意象。本文试图系统地读解德拉布尔小说中的自然、神话和宗教意象,并从这些意象所承载的自然情结、寻梦理想及道德关怀来阐释德氏小说所探讨的困境、梦想和救赎等核心主题及其相应的文化意蕴。
British novelist Margaret Drabble is noted for her truthful reflection of reality;hence her work is labeled as＂condition novel＂.Her way of cultivating themes is the adoption of images with profound metaphoric meanings,which fall roughly into three kinds with different references and functions.Natural images describe the contemporary living condition;mythical images express her longing for an ideal society;religious images reflect self-salvation of humankind.The titles of her novels like The Waterfall and The Gate of Ivory are all metaphoric images with rich cultural significance.This essay tries to carry out a systematic reading of the natural,mythical and religious images in Drabble＇s novels,in order to explore the cultural significance of such themes as predicament,dream and salvation.
