Rosamund, the heroine in Margaret Drabble's novel The Millstone , is one of the representatives of the new female intellectuals growing up under the influence of Simone de Beauvoir. In The Millstone, males are marginalized both in life and in career, becoming the second sex and "the Oth er". In order to remain independent, Rosamund even refuses to have sexual life, which has expressed the author's expectation of the female and signifies a meaningful exploration for the equality of the female, though a bit extreme. By contrast, we today advocate a kind of equality that is based on the harmony between two sexes.
