Distinguishing between two phases in China’s contemporary literary translation, this paper argues that the translator’s subjectivity was severely weakened in the first phase (1949-78) while it has been revitalized during the second. Probing into the underlying causes for the weakening in question during the first phase, the author identifies political ideology, rules and regulations, the modes of production and consumption of translated works, as the three key factors that affect our conception of the translator’s subjectivity.
