The author argues that although the relations between Bloomfield and Saussare have only recently been looked into, B's indebtedness and indeed discipleship to S is beyond doubt. Quite apart from B's open acknowledgement in an earlier (1926) paper (though not in his Language 1933), there is evidence that this is so. He then cites three instances to prove his point: (1) A comparable view on the importance of synchronic study; (2) a close resemblance in a negative estimate of 'reconstruction'; and (3) a parallel definition of the phoneme. In all three, the author says, one finds a broader and deeper grasp in Bloomfield.
