The discourses they...With the increasing focus on personal health in society, the media pays more and more attention to health issues. The media has the power to set agendas to create both public awareness and concern. The discourses they construct influence the shape of public opinion. This study merges corpus analysis and discourse studies to explore the discursive constructions around Chinese medicine in British newspapers. We found that the agenda surrounding traditional Chinese medicine set in British national newspapers is an important factor in imparting knowledge on Chinese medicine, influencing the understanding of issues the readers are concerned with, and shaping the public opinion on Chinese medicine.展开更多

Corpus-based translation studies has grown considerably over the past fifteen years or so.This paper appraises the uniformity and diversity of descriptive corpus studies of translation in terms of divergent similarity...Corpus-based translation studies has grown considerably over the past fifteen years or so.This paper appraises the uniformity and diversity of descriptive corpus studies of translation in terms of divergent similarity,as intended by Andrew Chesterman(1996,2004a,2006).The analysis focuses on the state of the art of research into translation universals,highlighting the interdisciplinary nature of current investigations and their contribution to the progress of the discipline as a whole.The general framework proposed by Chesterman is also used to introduce an envisaged study of Anglieisms whose aim is twofold:to unveil the translation-specific lexical primings of English loan words in the Italian language of business,finance and economics vis -à-vis donor and roceptor languages,and to infer the norms that govern the translation of Anglicisms vis-à-vis original text production in a specific domain and genre.展开更多

Language learning materials not only provide language input for learners but also subtly disseminate ideology and influence readers’behavior.This study,based on the framework of ecological discourse analysis,quantita...Language learning materials not only provide language input for learners but also subtly disseminate ideology and influence readers’behavior.This study,based on the framework of ecological discourse analysis,quantitatively analyzes and qualitatively describes the ecological significance of environmental texts in the 21st Century.The aim is to provide references for the compilation of environmental discourse in language learning materials,promote the construction of more ecologically beneficial discourse,and facilitate the widespread dissemination of the ecological philosophy of“Diversity and Harmony,Interaction and Co-existence”among young readers.The initial findings of this study are as follows:In the environmental texts of the publication,a large number of relational processes and action processes are used to objectively represent the natural environment;the discourse tends to be ambiguous and beneficial,generally aligning with the ecological philosophy of“Diversity and Harmony,Interaction and Co-existence.”This can guide readers to correctly understand and face environmental issues,which is conducive to the healthy development of natural ecosystems.展开更多
This paper explores the networks of thoughts behind words by reading architectural texts in the context of linguistics.Using a corpus-based model,our main interest is what the collocational data contribute at an archi...This paper explores the networks of thoughts behind words by reading architectural texts in the context of linguistics.Using a corpus-based model,our main interest is what the collocational data contribute at an architectural level.The notion of“collocation identification in architecture”was drawn from an analysis of the use of the data for Rem Koolhaas.The data for this study were collected from Rem Koolhaas’s articles from 1977 to 2014.An analysis of Koolhaas’s ideas about architecture and urban planning was conducted using the AntConc 3.4.4.0 corpus analysis toolkit.The corpus-based model reduced selected articles to words and lexical bundles using the corpus analysis toolkit.This paper explores Koolhaas’s thoughts on understanding architecture and the metaphors he uses by analyzing articles using the corpus-based analysis model.The discourse codes in the texts of Koolhaas are examined.A corpus-based model proposal tested on architectural texts has the potential to create new areas of knowledge for architectural discourse.Deciphering the texts and analyzing the codes contribute to the development of new models.展开更多
Despite the extensive effort to improve intelligent educational tools for smart learning environments,automatic Arabic essay scoring remains a big research challenge.The nature of the writing style of the Arabic langu...Despite the extensive effort to improve intelligent educational tools for smart learning environments,automatic Arabic essay scoring remains a big research challenge.The nature of the writing style of the Arabic language makes the problem even more complicated.This study designs,implements,and evaluates an automatic Arabic essay scoring system.The proposed system starts with pre-processing the student answer and model answer dataset using data cleaning and natural language processing tasks.Then,it comprises two main components:the grading engine and the adaptive fusion engine.The grading engine employs string-based and corpus-based similarity algorithms separately.After that,the adaptive fusion engine aims to prepare students’scores to be delivered to different feature selection algorithms,such as Recursive Feature Elimination and Boruta.Then,some machine learning algorithms such as Decision Tree,Random Forest,Adaboost,Lasso,Bagging,and K-Nearest Neighbor are employed to improve the suggested system’s efficiency.The experimental results in the grading engine showed that Extracting DIStributionally similar words using the CO-occurrences similarity measure achieved the best correlation values.Furthermore,in the adaptive fusion engine,the Random Forest algorithm outperforms all other machine learning algorithms using the(80%–20%)splitting method on the original dataset.It achieves 91.30%,94.20%,0.023,0.106,and 0.153 in terms of Pearson’s Correlation Coefficient,Willmot’s Index of Agreement,Mean Square Error,Mean Absolute Error,and Root Mean Square Error metrics,respectively.展开更多
