“The origin of the pigtails, due to the Manchu into the Central Plains…the elimination of the pig-tails, also accompanied by the end of Manchu rule.” From the decrees of hair-cutting in the early Qing Dynasty, to the political purge triggered by the “braid-cutting case” under the rule of Hongli in the mid-Qing Dynasty, and then to the anti-Qing revolution marked by the cutting of braids in the late Qing Dynasty, hair and braid are the evidence of Qing history. By sorting out the historical logic embedded in hair and braid, revealing the connotations in different levels, we can explain the complex power operations in the process of politicization and symbolization of the body. Hair and braid have always been highly politicized and regulated by power, and the path of power is not only coercive, negative and external, but also spontaneous, affirmative and endogenous. By disciplining and regulating the body, state power consolidates its rule.
