Saturday is the first novel in which Ian McEwan openly exposes the aftermath of 9/11. The narrative centers on the anxiety of its narrator Henry Perowne. Violence and fear of a terrorist attack haunt Perowne's narration. Through Perowne's narrative, McEwan admits that radical change in Western society is due to the 9/11 incident and criticizes the prevalent cynicism toward terrorism among British intellectuals. The writer further explores the conflict between terrorism and neo-liberalism and espouses the Utopian ideal as the legitimate excuse for the violence underlying both terrorism and neoliberalism. In face of this bleak reality, McEwan in his novel still emphasizes the power of empathy in confrontation with violence and terrorism.
