Drawing upon the data of 'Yangtze Scholars',we first examine the common characteristics of their development pattern and overall environment. We further compare the different development patterns between scholars of Humanities and Social Sciences( HSS) and those of Natural Sciences( NS). The common characteristics we identify are as follows: 1) Preeminent scholars in HSS need more time than those of NS to achieve equal success; 2) Preeminent scholars of HSS evidently outstand their colleagues; 3) The distribution of scholars of HSS are unbalanced among universities; 4) Relatively higher degrees of mobility are observed among them; 5) A large proportion of them occupy both academic and administrative positions. During the period of their professional development, top universities and top scholars interact with each other, where scholars contribute to the advancement of related disciplines in universities and universities provide them with substantial support. This reinforcing cycle naturally gives birth to a'Matthew effect'in academia.
