According to the traditional translation theory, translators must be faithful to the original text. However, in practical translation, misreading and misinterpretation are inevitable. Because understanding is somewhat of historical, the differences in cultural backgrounds, ways of thinking and values may lead to translator’s misreading or misunderstanding of the original text. Misreading can be categorized into conscious misreading and unconscious misreading. This thesis is going to discuss the positive significance of the misreading and misinterpretation in two Chinese versions of Pride and Prejudice from the perspective of hermeneutics.
