This article reviews 195 Chinese foreign language MOOCs studies from 2012 to 2024,and identifies three developmental phases:explosive growth, stabilization, and innovation. The current studies focus on teaching modes and teaching effectiveness, the current status of MOOCs construction and application, learner factors, course design and quality assessment, and teaching competence using MOOCs.However, most studies lack a theoretical framework, and there is a predominance of quantitative over qualitative research, resulting in a lack of depth in understanding the complex teaching process and learning experiences. In light of these findings, there is a mandate to revitalize research in this field, considering digital transformation in education and reinforcing the value of MOOCs as open educational resources.Theoretically,it is crucial to integrate theories from related fields, promote interdisciplinary scholarly conversations, and develop local theories pertaining to the application of MOOCs.Methodologically,it is important to adopt multiple research methods and acknowledge the transformative potential of emerging technologies such as big data and AIGC(Artificial Intelligence Generated Content)in revolutionizing foreign language education and in contributing to more nuanced and in-depth investigations of core issues such as the alignment of resource supply and demand, learning mechanisms, and teachers’digital competence, thus promoting the upgrading of MOOCs resources and their efficient utilization.
