Separation technique is a character-creating method frequently used by Shen Congwen, especially when his novels became increasingly mature.Inspired by Freud's theory of day-dreaming and personality structure,Shen Congwen used the“subjective splitting technique”to project different aspects of himself into a group of separated characters in his novels. In terms of genre, one is the“love separation’which explores the different paths in pursuit of love, and the second is the“cultural embodiment”that reflects Shen Congwen’s swaying self-positioning and his wavering between city and country, and the third is the“artistic embodiment”that symbolizes different ways to record and solidify life. These avatars reflect the contradiction and division of Shen Congwen's thoughts,as well as his profound understanding of the divisiveness and complexity of the subject.Through the speech and dialogue of the characters,Shen Congwen not only achieved the sorting-out and transcendence of his ideas and the self-healing of his spirit, but also highlighted the“dialogic”nature of the text, making his novels a literary work with clear polyphony.
