摘要
本文试图探讨系统功能语言学(SFL)理论与方法论的内在统一。SFL以基于系统思维的整体观对语境中的语言进行研究。SFL被设计为适用语言学,其导向是解决不同语境中涉及语言使用的各种问题。SFL认为语言是造义的资源,造义就在于对网络系统进行选择而形成的型式。Hasan指出,SFL的语言观决定了其理论与实践的内在统一,决定了其适用性。在将理论应用于实践的过程中必定有方法,这就促使我们提出这样的假设:SFL的语言观不仅决定了其理论与实践的内在统一,而且也决定了其理论与方法论的内在统一。SFL从一开始就聚焦于语言如何造义,聚焦于描写。描写的目的在于阐明不同层次上的语言意义。因此,多种描写是从理论派生并与理论对应的多种方法。Halliday总结说,SFL作为一种适用语言学具有一种理论和一套方法。研究表明,SFL的方法源于语言是网络系统的理论,具体表现为选择;SFL的方法还源于界定语言的造义维度,具体表现为体现。正是由于选择和体现系统地源于语言的定义和界定语言的造义维度并在整个语言中起作用,SFL的方法论内在于其理论之中。正如SFL的适用性源于其语言观,SFL的方法论也源于其语言观,SFL是理论与方法论内在统一的理论。
This paper aims to look into the inherent unity between theory and methodology in SystemicFunctional Linguistics(SFL). SFL is a holistic approach to language in context based on systems thinking.It is designed to be appliable, characterized as a problem-oriented theory that can be applied in varied contexts where language is used. SFL views language as a resource for making meaning, and meaning resides in systemic patterns of choice. Hasan pointed out that this view determines the unity of its theory with practice, and its appliability. As the application of theory to practice necessarily involves methodology, this prompts us to make the hypothesis that in SFL not only appliability is inherent in its view on language, but also its methodology. SFL is a linguistics that focuses on the description of language, showing how language works. As the aim of description is to elucidate linguistic meaning at its various levels, the different types of description are bodies of method which derive from, and are answerable to, that theory. Halliday concluded that SFL as an appliable linguistics is a theory and a body of method. The present research shows that in SFL methodology is derived from its definition of language as a network of systems, specifically manifested in the concept of choice, and it is also derived from the semiotic dimensions that define language, specifically manifested in the concept of realization. As choice and realization are systematically derived from the definition of language and the semiotic dimensions that define language, and they work throughout language,we say that the methodology of SFL is embedded in its theory. Just as appliability, which means the integrity of theory and practice, is inherent in its view on language, so is its methodology. This is what it means by the unity of theory and methodology.
