This study explores readers’cognitive patterns of understanding narratives based on Text World Theory in cognitive narratology. It is found that due to the discrepancy of world-building elements and the suspension of function-advancing propositions, readers of multiple point-of-view novels incline to construct relatively independent text worlds corresponding to different narrators’stories;the disharmony of text worlds is triggered by the contradiction of the same event or character between the sub-worlds of each narrator.Based on the constructed cognitive model of multiple point-of-view novels, the study takes the novel The Sound and the Fury as an example to explain the cognitive narrative function of the disharmony between different text worlds in highlighting the narrators’respective personality and uncovering the multiple themes of the work from the readers’perspective.
