The active response to China’s aging population has been elevated to a national strategy.Using data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study(CHARLS)from 2011,2013 and 2015,this paper estimates the short-term impact of widowhood shocks on the health status of the elderly, focusing on whether pensions are able to alleviate the adverse health effects of widowhood. The results of the study show that widowhood shocks increase the overall likelihood that older people will need help in their activities of daily living(ADL)or instrumental activities of daily living(IADL)and that they will become mentally depressed.Only higher-paid pension insurance, such as basic old-age insurance for employees of government agencies, institutions or enterprises, can significantly eliminate the adverse effects of widowhood shocks on the health of the elderly.Compared to elderly couples for whom both spouses have lower pension insurance,if both spouses have higher pension insurance, the negative impact of widowhood on their health is relatively small. The results of the heterogeneity analysis also show that widowhood has a greater impact on health of older women, but there are no significant differences in the alleviation effect of higher-paid pension insurance between older men and women.
