摘要
傅兰雅是晚清时期来华的英国传教士,受聘于江南制造总局翻译馆,从事西书中译工作长达28年。他不仅翻译了大量西方科学著作,还在推动近代中国科学术语译名规范化方面做出了巨大贡献。本文先讨论傅兰雅的科技翻译实践及其翻译观,然后分析指出他对近代科学术语译名规范化的主要贡献,其中包括他所主编的《格致汇编》和翻译的《化学鉴原》,这些都对奠定近代化学元素译名基础、汇编科学名词名目表、规范科学术语翻译以及普及近代科学知识起到积极的推动作用。
John Fryer was a British missionary in the late Qing Dynasty who came to China and was employed by The Translation Department of Kiangnan Arsenal. He has been engaged in the translation work for over 28 years,not only having translated a great deal of western scientific works into Chinese,but also having contributed greatly to the standardization of the scientific terminology translation. This paper first attempts to probe into Fryer's scientific translation practice and his translation ideas,and then points out that Fryer's major contributions to the standardization of the scientific terminology translation in Modern China,including the magazine Ko-chih-hui-pien he established,the book Mirroring the Origins of Chemistry he translated and various lists of bilingual technical terms he coined.
