An Artist of the Floating World completed by Kazuo Ishiguro is written in the first narration by the narrator, Ono, whose second daughter, Noriko, is preparing for her Miai. Serving as the main thread, the marriage preparation gradually discloses Ono's past acting as an Imperialist in World War Ⅱ. Focused on "dignity", the text describes Ono's progress from shirking the past to dealing bravely with the fault. Aimed at digging the subtext and the covert progression, combining the overt plot and undercurrent running, this paper points out that so-called "dignity" is, in fact, a sort of blind vanity, of which the other side is "alienation". Laying emphasis on interpreting the double irony, this paper overturns the flat interpretation of the character, and draws out a fuller understanding of the text.
