Estrogen is a kind of hormone secreted by the ovaries, placenta, and adrenal and plays an important role in maintaining the normal function of women and bone homeostasis. Recent studies increasingly suggest that human estrogen receptor (ESR) can be expressed in chondrocytes and ESR gene polymorphisms are closely associated with the onset of osteoarthritis (OA) . Also, estrogen or selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMS) therapies on patients with OA may exert protective effects in a certain extent. From the perspective of molecular biology and clinical analysis, this review made a in - depth analysis on the specific association between estrogen and its receptors and OA to provide a new theoretical basis for the prevention and treatment of OA.
