In September 2010, bronze fragments, jades and oracle bones were unearthed from a tomb south of the Wangjiazui village at Zhouyuan site, Shaanxi province. After a preliminary restoration of the bronze fragments, vessels such as li, zun, gu, jue and jia have been identified. The li, jia and gu are dated to the upper Erligang period, jue to the first phase of Yinxu and zun to the early second phase of Yinxu. It is believed that this is a tomb of the Jingdang type of Shang culture. The zun, which is the first zun ever discovered belonging to the Jingdang type, is similar to those from the Yangtze river region in shape and decoration. Shattered bronzes in burials have not been discovered in other tombs of the Jingdang type. These findings will improve understanding about the burial customs of the Jingdang type, the distribution of Jingdang type cemeteries and settlement structure at Zhouyuan site.
