This paper casts new light on the stone sculptures found from the Shimao site and the symbolic meaning of tiger motifs. In addition, this paper contextualizes the discovery of the sculptures in broader contexts and discusses the meaning of the‘tiger-eating-human’motif and similar motifs found on Shang-Zhou period bronzes.Given the wide coverage of the motif on the sculptures, the author argues that the decoration might have been used for public display, and that its nature was different from those personalized jade figures dating to the Longshan-Erlitou period. Moreover, the author suggests that the motif might have been the origin of the beast motif on bronze ritual vessels.
