Tennessee Williams is one of the most prominent playwrights in United States after World War II. A Streetcar Named Desire is one his most influential works. Blanche Dubois, a fading, though still attractive Southern belle, is the heroine in the play. Though the aristocratic identity brought her elegant manners, she became rather lonely inside under the influences of the industrial social environment. In addition, the decline of the estate made her personality increasingly complicated and distorted. All of these lead to Blanche' s great tragedy. Based on such understanding of A Streetcar Named Desire, this paper tries to analyze Blanche ' s tragedy in the play, and further explore the roots of her tragic fate.
