Zhao Youqin, a Taoist in Yuan Dynasty, presented an optical thesis named "Xiaoxia Guangjing" (images by an aperture) in his astronomical book Gexiang Xinshu. So far, abundant academic discussions had been made on the thesis. However, previous scholarship didn't notice that the aim of Zhao's research on pinhole images was to explain the perplexing phenomena in observation of solar eclipse; such research had no precedent in ancient China before Yuan Dynasty, but was a significant task in western optical inquiry from ancient Greece. According to analysis of the related literature, this paper shows that Zhao's research, like Western European scholars after 13th century, was deeply influenced by Arabic optics. Furthermore, the paper concludes that Guo Shoujing could not be the intermediary agent between Zhao and Islamic science, and that Zhao's puzzle of pinhole image was most likely brought by Qiu Chuji from the Western Regions.
