Em gene is induced by ABA and environmental stresses such as desiccation and salt. The effect of desiccation and salt stresses on Em gene expression appears to operate through increasing the endogenous levels of ABA or increasing the sensitivity of cells to ABA. The Em promoter can be functionally dissected into three components. The 5'distal AT-rich region that is responsible for different levels of expression through effects on transcription. These sequences are analogous to nonspecific enhancer regions. The next region of regulatory sequences is the ABA response element (ABRE) that is responsible for a dramatic increase in expression in response to ABA as a result of an interaction between ABRE and EmBP-1. The third component is the 5'flanking region of the Em gene, which appears to be involved in the ultimate level of expression through posttranscription.
