Based on an analysis of the middle-class status of ethnic Chinese in Australia, this paper is aimed at providing a new perspective for analysing the widely-debated issue of overseas Chinese participation in politics of their host countries. Socio-economic status of Australian Chinese has changed dramatically since the early 1990s,and their community-wide demand for political participation and their actual power of influence are also increasing rapidly. The battle for the seat of Bennelong,an inner north shore Sydney electorate, where ethnic Chinese account for a large fraction of the local population, during the 2007 Federal election was a turning-point in promoting greater participation by ethnic Chinese in political processes in Australia. This paper will analyse the new middle class status of ethnic Chinese living in Australia, and its impact on their political participation and their political aspirations, especially various forms of their participation in political and public life in Australia and the level of their influence since the Bennelong battle.
