NAC ( NAM, ATAF1, ATAF2 and CUC2 ) family proteins are plant-specific transcription factors which constitute one of the largest families. The family is present in a wide range of land plants with more than a hundred members in plant genomes. The NAC genes contains a general structure that consists of a highly conserved NAC domain at the N-terminus and a variable C-terminal functions as the activation domain. NAC transcription factors play important roles in multiple biological processes such as plant development, response to stresses and hormone signals. This article provide an overview of the basic structure, biological function and current status of plant NAC transcription factors.
