The Ten Masterpieces by Talented Authors of the Yuan, the Ming and the Qing dynasty span the generic spectrum from novels, dramas to song lyrics and even fiddle ballads (tan ci), and have been granted a prominent status in the history of Chinese literature. Their early translation into European languages marked the inception of'the introduction of Chinese learning to the West'and played a key role in shaping European men of letters’perception of Chinese culture. Based on a survey of the early English versions of the Ten Masterpieces by Talented Authors, this paper looks into the motivations underlying European translations of these works, the formats in which their translations were first published, the strategies adopted by the translators, as well as the influences they had exerted on Europe’s literary circles. The findings of this study are expected to shed fresh light on China’s current efforts to promote its culture abroad by translating Chinese classics into Western languages.
