This paper discusses the first English translation of Tang monk poet Han Shah. The existing research claims that it is in 1954 that Han Shan's poems were translated for the first time into English by Arthur Waley. The fact is that the first English translation of Han Shah's poems appeared as early as in 1933. Dr. John Hart translated Han Shan's "The House of Chung" under the influence of Chinese scholar Dr. Hu Shi's History of Vernacu- lar Literature and with the help of the Chinese diplomat Mr. Pi-Chi Sun. Thus it is the Chinese elements that helped to bring Han Shan to the English world. Meanwhile Japanese scholar Tetsuso Okada translated 6 poems of Hart Shan to the English world in 1937, one year earlier than D. T. Suzuki's introduction of Han Shan in Zen and Its Influence on Jap- anese Culture, which was regarded as an important source of influence on the translations later in the 1950s. These early translations can help to cast new light on reception of Han Shan's poetry in the English world.
