Owner-managers' Control Concentration:A New Perspective of Boundary Theory

摘要 与企业主关系亲近会让经理人获得更多授权吗?本文借助边界理论的分析框架提出了一种新的理论逻辑,强调家族涉入管理会影响企业主边界行为策略,进而影响控制权配置行为。基于双样本和两重测量的实证研究发现,家族涉入管理与企业主集权程度正相关,而目前学界普遍认同的企业主与经理关系亲近就会向后者更多授权的命题,仅在家族不涉入管理的情况下成立,在家族涉入管理的情况下并不成立。上述研究结果表明,家族涉入管理容易诱导企业主将"家长"身份与"企业家"身份一体化,把职业经理也纳入家长式集权管理之下,即使他们与企业主之间建立起"泛家族化"的亲近关系,也不易获得企业主的更多授权。 It's a popular view that the owner-managers are likely to empower the professional managers who have close Guanxi with them.According to boundary theory,we questioned this view and proposed a new theoretical logic to explain the owner-managers' control concentration.We contended that family involvement in management may influence owner-manager's boundary behaviors,which in turn impact on the actual control arrangement in the family business.Specifically,an owner-manager is likely to integrate the patriarch identity with the entrepreneur identity and shift patriarch behaviors in family to the business field when his or her family members involving in firm management.In contrast,the ownermanager is likely to act as an entrepreneur and empowers the trusted managers when no family members involved.The main reason is that in family managed firms the frequent interaction among family managers results in permeable and flexible boundary of the two role identities and integration of them can save the owner-manager much psychological and behavioral cost for role switching,while in firms without family management involvement high contrast between the two role identities and high potential costs of role conflicts push the owner-manager to separate them and get use to switching between them.According to above logic,we expected that the extent of family management involvement is positively related to the extent of the owner's control concentration.Furthermore,whether family members involving in management can become a clue to predict the control distribution in an owner managed firm-the ownermanagers will concentrate control and empower nobody in family management firms while empower managers who have close Guanxi with them in firms without family management involvement.A dual-sample test and alternative measurement support our hypotheses.Our findings offered a new explanation for the growing constraint of family businesses,that the role integration can impede owner-managers' rational contingent empowerment on the ba
