Metafictional impulses are evident in Muriel Spark's novels on different levels of the narrative:from the framing device to generic elements. Her use of the"mise en abyme"technique draws attention to the characters' comments on fiction and reality's imitation of fiction, blurring the distinction between fiction and reality. In their generic mixing of poems, journals and letters,Spark's novels embody her own ideas about the writer, the reader, and the text.An examination of Spark's fascination with metafictional narratives therefore reveals her belief that writing is a self-conscious and self-referential process.
