Descriptive translation studies(DTS) is a target-culture oriented approach to translation studies, which studies translation norms dominating translation practice.Since its upsurge in the 1970s,DTS has had a great effect on the paradigm of translation studies. The Israeli scholar,Gideon Toury, published In Search of a Theory of Translation in 1980 and brought out a new edition in 1995.The notion of "translation norms" raised in this book has always been the center of DTS,and examples of "pseudotranslation and assumed translation" duly demonstrate how translation norms work.In the early 1990s,the cultural school of translation represented by Susan Bassnett promoted the campaign of "cultural turn" through a cultural mode of translation studies, driving DTS into a new phase of development.Meanwhile, some weaknesses of the ongoing DTS were gradually found and much discussed during its development. From the late 1990s to the beginning of 21st century, sociological view has been more and more adopted in DTS as a complementary approach to DTS,offering updated considerations on the position of the translator and translation norms, with the geopolitical issues as one of its interfering factors.
