摘要
本文运用语用学中Sperber&Wilson提出的关联理论和Levinson对"话轮沉默"的分类标准,对美国著名女作家伊迪斯·华顿的代表作《纯真年代》中主要人物之间"话轮沉默"的第三类"沉默单独充当话轮"这一现象进行分析,包括话轮沉默的认知语境,信息意图和交际意图,以及语境效果三方面,并且认为关联性不仅能够让文学作品中听话人能够了解对方沉默的交际意图,而且从读者的角度来说,读者通过分析人物的沉默现象还能够挖掘人物的心理,理解作者想向读者传递的真正交际意图。
This paper aims to analyze the phenomenon of ＂significant silence＂ ,the third type of ＂turn silence＂ in The Age of Innocence,best representative work by Edith Wharton under the theory of relevance put for-ward by Sperber Wilson and the classification of ＂turn silence＂ by Levinson. The analysis involves three parts：cognitive context,information intention and communicative intention,and contextual effect. This paper holds that the attribute of relevance can not enable one party of the dialogue in literary works to understand the true intention of silence of the other party,but from the perspective of the reader,based on the analysis of the ＂significant silence＂ of the characters,it can also enable the reader further the understanding of the psychology of them and thus can appreciate the true communicative intention the author wants to convey.
