The image of China in the eyes of Westerners is a product of Western ideology and discourse, and swung between light and shade during the 20th century. Under this influence, Hong Kong and Singapore, at the crossroad of eastern and western cultures, constructed the evolution of China image in the latter half of the 20th century through literature : closed and ignorant, poor and backward. The style of Hong Kong literature is in strong sense ; Singapore, moderate and rational, but all conveyed a strong sense of goodwill and recognition of emotions in the ideological denial.
